Kostas Stafylidis signs on loan for English club Stoke City
Greek left-back Kostas Stafylidis has officially joined English Premier League outfit Stoke City, signing on loan from Augsburg until the end of the 2017/2018 season. The fee is reported to stand at 600 thousand euros.
Since the campaign began, Stafylidis has struggled to get into the Augsburg team, losing confidence as a result. Nevertheless, a move to such a high profile league is sure to give the 24-year old’s career a required boost. On their official website, Stoke announced the deal: “The Greek international will remain at the bet365 stadium until the end of the season and will provide stern competition down the left-hand side. Primarily a defender, Stafylidis can also operate as a wing-back and could be in contention to make his Potters debut this weekend against Huddersfield Town.”
After arriving in England, Stafylidis shared his emotions in an interview with Stoke City. “I am so happy to be here,” beamed Stafylidis. “It has always been a big dream of mine to one day play in the Premier League, and now thank you to Stoke City I have this opportunity. As soon as I heard, I told my agent directly that I wanted this move. It is good for me and the club to bring me here for five months and I am very happy about that.”
On his Instagram account, Stafylidis made a post saying that he is “blessed.” Stafylidis becomes the fourth Greek to sign for an English Premier League club, following in Orestis Karnezis’, Jose Holebas’ and Konstantinos Mavropanos’ footsteps. He does have previous experience of playing in England though, previously representing Fulham in the English Championship during the 2014/2015 season.
Stafylidis has played for PAOK, Bayer Leverkusen, Fulham and Augsburg in his career, also making 21 appearances for the Greek national team and scoring two goals in those matches.
