Lazaros edging closer to Olympiacos move

AEK Athens star Lazaros Christodoulopoulos is on his way out of the newly crowned Greek champions, as the midfielder refused to sign a new contract with the Kitrinomavri and is expected to join Olympiacos.

The talented midfielder enjoyed a superb campaign with AEK, scoring seven goals in 27 Super League appearances and showing flashes of brilliance to fire the Athenian giants to their first Greek title in 24 years. Christodoulopoulos appeared to be settled and playing the best football of his career, but in a surprise development, his relationship with AEK has turned sour and it seems his time with the Enosis is up.

Yesterday, AEK released this following statement to the media, venting their anger at Christodoulopoulos’ talks with Olympiacos: “For us, Lazaros is finished, because he spoke with another team for a month and didn’t respect the contract which he signed until 2019.” While Christodoulopoulos’ contract does run out this summer, there was an option to extend it for another year, with AEK claiming the midfielder had already signed to stay until 2019.

In an interview with Nova Sports, Christodoulopoulos denied this, stating that his contract with AEK has reached its completion: “The contract has finished.” After AEK’s announcement, the 31-year old responded in a telephone call with Greek media outlet Sport24: “In the last few hours, I have been under pressure to sign a new contract with AEK, but no one signs contracts when receiving threats. Unfortunately, under these conditions, I cannot stay with AEK.” The Enosis insist that Christodoulopoulos signed to continue playing with the club for a further year and the matter could become very messy as it progresses.

Rumours suggest Lazaros Christodoulopoulos has decided to join Olympiacos, although the Piraeus outfit are yet to make any comment connected with the situation. Assuming Christodoulopoulos did not sign any potential agreement with AEK for the upcoming season, the probability of him joining Olympiacos is very high.
