Levadiakos Put Reds’ Title Champagne on Ice
GREEK SUPERLEAGUE - MATCHDAY 28
|Levadiakos||1 - 1||Olympiacos|
|Vasiliou 43'||Cardozo 89'|
Struggling Levadiakos conjured up an unlikely 1-1 draw against SuperLeague leaders Olympiacos - a result which put the expected title celebrations of Takis Lemonis’ side on hold for at least another week.
Stelios Vasileiou opened the scoring for the home side two minutes before half-time, capitalising on a defensive error from the visitors to score.
And the home side looked like they might even get a famous win - until the 89th minute when striker Oscar Cardozo netted from close range after neat interplay between Andreas Bouchalakis and Seba.
The result ensures that the title race goes on for another week as it leaves Olympiacos now just six points points clear of second-placed PAOK with two matches to play, while Levadiakos slipped into the bottom two and face a tough battle to stay up.
Olympiacos were well below bar against a lively home side who played above themselves for long spells. The goal came about due to a woeful mixup in the Olympiacos defence, with Andre Martins smashing a clearance off teammate Panagiotis Retsos. The ball fell into the path of Vasileiou, who composed himself impressively before firing a low shot past Stefano Kapino’s dive.
Despite periods of extended pressure late on after the home side began to suffer from fatigue, Olympiacos did not look like they would find an equaliser until Cardozo’s late intervention, and their fans will be hoping for a better showing when they welcome PAS Giannina on April 23 at the Georgios Karaiskakis for what is anticipated to consist of a 44th league title party victory.
