Low Cost Players That Proved to be “Jackpots”
AGONAsport.com takes a look back at low cost players that played a vital role for their respective clubs in this year’s Greek Superleague.
In recent years, Greece has gone through a heavy financial recession and that has also taken its toll on Greek football. More and more teams now rely on low budget players to fill their rosters with hopes of putting together the best team possible.
The finding of such key, low-cost players is not only a matter of high level scouting and timing, but also a matter of luck. However, a low cost player with a large output can turn into a real “jackpot” for a club and the following players are AGONAsport’s “jackpots” for the 2016/17 Superleague season!
Hamza Younés (Xanthi)
Hamza Younés was a personal choice of coach Răzvan Lucescu and he turned out to be Xanthi’s most valuable player this season. In 27 matches, he scored 19 goals to finish second behind Marcus Berg of Panathinaikos in the league’s top goal scorers chart. He finished the season with 57 attempts on goal, translating to an impressive 1 goal per every 2.7 attempts. Apart from scoring, Younes finished the season with 3 assists.
Xanthi will surely hope to renew Younes’ contract, however his good performances with the club has linked him to various teams in Greece and abroad.
Pedro Conde (PAS Giannina)
After starring in Spain’s lower divisions, Pedro Conde left Spain for PAS Giannina over the summer. In his first season with the “Ajax of Epirus,” Conde scored 13 goals in 25 matches in addition to his one assist.
Conde has one year left on his contract with PAS Giannina and will likely stay for at least one more year at the club.
Rogério Thuram (Kerkyra)
After 2 seasons with Apollon Limassol in Cyprus, Thuram joined Kerkyra this past summer to help the “Faiakes” avoid relegation in the Superleague. This season, Thuram scored 7 goals with Kerkyra helping his side to not only avoid relegation, but also to a midtable finish. The 25 year old has shown great potential in both finishing and creating scoring opportunities.
If he does not transfer out over the offseason, Thuram will remain another year with the islanders to help keep his side in the Superleague for yet another season.
Farley Rosa (Panetolikos)
Farley Rosa joined Panetolikos as an additional option in the attacking midfield position and went on to claim the clubs’ honor as “best substitute.” The youngster made 23 appearances for Panetolikos and managed to score 5 goals and give 6 assists.
Farley Rosa will continue in Agrinio next season and will deservedly earn a place in the club’s starting line-up
