Manolas, Donis, Samaris suspended for final qualifier
Greece will be without three key players on Tuesday against Gibraltar as Manolas, Donis, and Samaris will be suspended after picking up yellow cards against Cyprus. Due to the multiple absences, Michael Skibbe has recalled up Manolis Siopis to the squad.
Manolas, Donis, and Samaris each picked up a yellow card during Saturday’s qualifier against Cyprus, and the four men will be suspended for Greece’s next qualifier against Gibraltar. Although the four will be missed against bottom of the table Gibraltar, they will all be available for BOTH legs in the November playoffs.
In fact, it seemed that Donis, Samaris, and Manolas intentionally picked up a yellow card near the end of the game so they do not risk being suspended for the November playoffs, choosing to be suspended for Tuesday’s qualifier against Gibraltar. Both Samaris and Donis committed unnecessary, clumsy booking offenses while Manolas received a yellow for time wasting. As a result, if any of these players were to pick up a yellow in the first leg of the playoffs, they will NOT be suspended for the second leg.
Their absences has forced Michael Skibbe to call up Panionios’ Manolis Siopis to the squad for Tuesday’s clash against Gibraltar.
A reminder, Greece only need to defeat Gibraltar to clinch second place in the group and a spot in the playoffs after Slovenia held Scotland to a 2-2 draw on Sunday.
