Many Departures Expected at Olympiacos This Summer
In addition to a new coach (likely) and new signings, many players are expected to leave Olympiacos this summer.
Despite winning this year’s SuperLeague title, Olympiacos have declared major changes in order to strengthen the team for next season’s Superleague and European season. Apart from the coaching situation at hand (temporary coach Takis Lemonis could remain at the helm) major changes in the team’s roster are expected with president Vaggelis Marinakis having promised the signing of valuable players but also a clean up of the current roster.
At a first glance, there are 6 foreign players that are almost certain to leave. Chori Domínguez and Esteban Cambiasso will likely move on as the club is expected to rely on more younger and talented players. Both Argentineans will meet with Marinakis within the next few days and discuss their future at the club.
Striker Óscar Cardozo did not live up to Olympiacos’ expectations and it is almost certain that he will not be offered a contract renewal. Moreover, his manager stated that the player’s will is to return to Paraguay and end his career there.
Manuel da Costas’ contract is ending this summer and Olympiacos are not intended to offer a contract renewal while Alberto de la Bella, who is on loan at Piraeus from Real Sociedad, will likely return to Spain. Bruno Viana, who has also put on below average displays, is expected to to be sent out on loan given that he is still only 22 years old.
As for the other players on loan at Olympiacos, Aly Cissokho, Juan Carlos Paredes, and Nicola Leali will certainly return to their parent teams.
Another section of next season’s planning includes the players on loan away from Olympiacos, which consists of 21 players! Apart from Gianniotas and Laifis who are expected to return, decisions regarding the other players must be made. (Siovas, Kolovos, Vouros, Kasami, Martinez, Goutas, Elabdellaoui, Laci, Ben, Zdjelar, Saliakas, Pardo, Asigba, Karageorgis, Vergos, Karamanos, Tzandaris, Karnas).
However, until a coach is hired, nothing is certain and the fate of these players on loan will ultimately be decided by the new man in charge.
