One of those is undoubtedly Marko Marin. Olympiacos supporters have been waiting for the German playmaker to finally leave a big mark on the club and it appears this season he is finally beginning to.
In 21 matches this season, Marin has tallied four goals and five assists. Those are decent returns, but of greater importance than statistics is the 28-year-old’s ability to influence his side in key matches.
Especially in the last six weeks, Marin’s contributions have been key. First there was his assist and goal in the 3-1 come from behind win away to Kerkyra. In the match away to Panetolikos, Marin’s skill was at the center of Olympiacos’ early goal as he combined neatly with Panagiotis Tachtsidis before serving up an assist for Kostas Fortounis.
Then last week against PAS Giannina, it was Marin’s fantastic finish that was the difference in a game Olympiacos controlled but couldn’t break through in until ex-Chelsea player’s intervention.
Overall, Marin hasn’t made the impact he was expected to in Piraeus since coming to the club in the summer of 2016. However, his performances as of late indicate that perhaps Marin is ready to become one of the key cogs in this side going forward. Marin has struggled in his career to translate his creativity and technical skill into consistent performances for extended periods of time. Now settled in Piraeus and beginning to produce regularly, Marin could finally become the main man and leader the fans have been craving as he enters what should be the prime of his career.
