Masoud joins AEK on six-month deal
Following weeks of speculation, 33-year-old Iranian midfielder Masoud Shojaei has finally joined AEK Athens. In a statement on their website, AEK confirmed that the ex-Panionios man put pen to paper on a six-month deal with an extension option.
Masoud recently left Panionios on a free, going to train with Spanish club Las Palmas while being out of contract. However, it’s long been known that AEK head coach Manolo Jimenez is a fan of Masoud, eager for him to join AEK. Given the long-term injuries suffered by Petros Mantalos and Jakob Johansson, attacking midfielder Masoud offers Jimenez a new alternative.
On their official website, AEK explained the terms of the deal: “AEK announces an agreement with Masoud Shojaei, who has signed a deal until the end of the current season with the right to renew his contract for another year. With AEK, Masoud will wear the number 24 on his jersey.”
During two seasons with Panionios, Masoud notched up seven goals and six assists in the Super League. Masoud has spent the majority of his best days in Spain, making over 100 appearances with Osasuna. He has played for Iran on 70 occasions. His best attributes are providing a real threat from the midfield, possessing the ability to open up opposition defences. Masoud can also play on the wings. AEK will be hoping that Masoud can fill the gap left by the injured Mantalos, sitting in behind the two strikers. With AEK facing a busy schedule in early 2018, Jimenez will be relieved that his squad depth has increased to an extent.
