Mbokani to lead Olympiacos’ attacking line next season
Olympiacos have turned to Dieumerci Mbokani as the man that will lead the club’s attacking line next season. The 31-year striker will arrive in Athens tomorrow to finalize his deal with the Erythrolefki.
According to sportfm’s Kostas Nikolakopoulos, Dieumerci Mbokani will arrive in Athens tomorrow to sign a deal with Olympiacos. The 31-year old striker was a personal selection of coach Besnik Hasi, who worked with the player at Anderlecht. The Albanian manager feels that Mbokani will fit the playing style he wants to implement in the team and the striker from Congo will be club’s the “#9” next season.
Last season will be one to forget for Mbokani, who played on loan at Hull City (from Dynamo Kiev) making only 12 appearances with no goals scored. He was troubled by injuries but also missed out on many Premier League games due to his presence at the Copa Africa.
The player’s rights belong to Dynamo Kiev and the season before last, he was on another loan deal in the Premier League with Norwich City. He had a much better spell there making 29 appearances with seven goals.
Mbokani made his name known during a three year spell at Standard Liege from 2007-2010 where we scored 39 goals in 87 appearances. He then had a disappointing year at Monaco (half the season on loan at Wolfsburg) and returned to Belgium for Anderlecht where he starred with 34 goals in 54 matches. There he worked with current Olympiacos boss Besnik Hasi.
Dynamo Kiev came knocking on Anderlecht’s door after his two great seasons with the Belgian club and managed to score 13 goals in his first season in the Ukraine. He had difficulty adapting to the harsh environments in the country which led to two loan deals to Norwich City and Hull City (mentioned above).
Before making a move for the 31-year old striker, Olympiacos inquired about the player with former Olympiacos and Hull City boss, Marco Silva. The Portuguese manager spoke highly of Mbokani and Olympiacos proceeded with his case.
He is scheduled to arrive in Athens in the early afternoon and will go through the necessary medical tests before signing a new deal with Olympiacos. With the signing of Mbokani, Olympiacos fill a big gap in the roster as the new player will have plenty of time to adapt to his new club.
