Olympiacos carved out a narrow 86-85 win in Italy on Thursday night as the Erythrolefki defeated AX Armani Exchange Olimpia Milan to improve to 7-2 on the season in the EuroLeague.
McLean’s 22 points and 7 rebounds led Olympiacos to their third straight win, which sees the Piraeus giants temporarily go alone atop the league standings.
A slow start for Olympiacos’ offense saw Milan take the lead in the first quarter, only for the Piraeus outfit to storm back in the second frame with a 29-21 run before the interval to take a 46-42 into the locker rooms.
Both sides jockeyed for the lead after halftime, but Olympiacos matched Milan shot-for-shot in the third quarter to ensure their lead remained intact heading into the decisive quarter.
Despite a strong fightback from Milan, it was McLean’s efforts that kept the Italian side at bay in the dying moments with the American big-man drawing a foul while scoring to put Olympiacos ahead by just one-point in the dying moments.
Milan would get two chances to take back the lead; however, blanketed coverage from the Olympiacos defense ensure Milan wouldn’t find a way back.
Olympiacos will now look to keep their winning streak alive when last year’s finalists travel to Spain to take on Valencia Basket next Thursday. Milan, who will certainly feel heartbroken by the loss to their Adriatic neighbours, now sit 3-6 and look to improve on that mark against Anadolu Efes next week.
