Misfiring Greens held to stalemate by Apollon Smyrni
GREEK SUPERLEAGUE - MATCHDAY 19
|Apollon Smyrnis||0 - 0||Panathinaikos|
Panathinaikos lacked firepower up front as they were held to a goalless draw at Apollon Smyrni on Saturday in a matchday 19 clash in which they showed plenty of character and energy but no cutting edge, while Kerkyra defeated Platanias 2-0.
Marinos Ouzounidis’ players, who were hoping to build on last weekend’s 4-0 drubbing of Kerkyra, were impressive in patches and controlled much of the possession, but could not find a way past the home side’s determined defence.
The best chances of the match fell to the Greens with Israeli forward Omri Altman going close twice, while Swedish defender Mattias Johansson was also denied by the woodwork in the first half.
The home side also had substitute Paschalis Staikos sent off in the second minute of added time after he received two bookings in the 15-minute spell he played.
Overall Apollon were unadventurous on the verge of anaemic going forward, with Giorgos Paraschos’ side looking content to soak up any pressure that came their way and rarely committing players forward in an effort to earn a crucial point in their battle against relegation.
And the hosts achieved their aim, leaving the visitors frustrated as yet more points were dropped in what is turning out to be a dreadful season on all fronts with the clubs finances still in deep trouble.
The result means Panathinaikos remain in eight place with 23 points, a total of 18 points adrift of leaders and fierce rivals Olympiacos, while Apollon are out of the relegation zone only on goal difference.
|Kerkyra||2 - 0||Platanias|
|Thuram (P) 45'+3',75'|
Meanwhile in Corfu, Kerkyra bounced back from last week’s defeat to Panathinaikos with a 2-0 home win over basement club Platanias, helping their fight to avoid the drop.
A brace from Brazilian forward Thuram, one from the penalty spot on the stroke of half-time and a second with 15 minutes left, did the damage for the home side.
The outcome is that Kerkyra moved level on 14 points with Apollon, but are behind their relegation rivals on goal difference.
