Greek international Mitroglou was a major injury doubt ahead of Wednesday’s Europa League showpiece match against Atletico Madrid in Lyon, but in a positive development, the 31-year old was included in Rudi Garcia’s squad which travelled to France for the match. If Mitroglou is given a chance on the pitch to trouble Atletico’s defence, he could cause the Spaniards real problems, as he has already scored against the club on two occasions in European competitions. Let’s take a look at Mitroglou’s previous markers in matches with Atletico.

In the 2014/2015 UEFA Champions League season, Olympiacos hosted Atletico Madrid in Piraeus, looking to surprise Europe and beat the tournament’s former finalists. Olympiacos managed to do just that, putting in a superb performance to defeat Atletico 3:2 at the Karaiskakis Stadium.

Arthur Masuaku and Ibrahim Afellay gave Olympiacos a 2:0 lead, before Mario Mandzukic dragged Atletico back into the match. Nevertheless, Mitroglou put paid to any hopes of a Spanish comeback, controlling a pass in the penalty area and dispatching a low effort under the goalkeeper. Antoine Griezmann grabbed a second for Atletico late on, but Olympiacos held on to win 3:2.

Next season, Mitroglou once again went to battle against Atletico Madrid, albeit as a Benfica player. Despite playing at home in Lisbon, Benfica struggled in front of their supporters, going two goals down after Saul and Luciano Vietto hit the target.

Benfica did end up losing the game 1:2, but Mitroglou wasn’t leaving the pitch without having his say. On 75 minutes, the forward spun his marker and rolled a clever shot in with the help of the right post, a goal very similar to the one he scored with Olympiacos a year earlier.
