Mitroglou & Samaris Win League title with Benfica
On Saturday, Kostas Mitroglou’s and Andreas Samaris’ Benfica celebrated the Portuguese Primeira Liga Title after a 5-0 thrashing of Guimaraes.
Although the two Greece internationals did not make an appearance in Saturday's fixture against Guimaraes, Benfica thrashed their opponents 5-0 and mathematically secured this year's Portuguese Primeira Liga Title. It is the club’s fifth consecutive league title and their 36th in club history, the most out of any other side in Portugal.
Since joining Benfica in 2014, Samaris has celebrated the league title in all three of his seasons in Portugal while Mitroglou claimed his second league title with the Eagles. During the celebrations, Samaris posted a selfie with Mitroglou on Facebook and wrote "Another title for the Greeks abroad. We continue to hold our flag up high. And congratulations to Mitrogol for another great season."
Mitroglou played a key role in Benfica’s successful season, scoring a career high 26 goals with 15 of them coming in league play.
As for Samaris, the Greek midfielder saw less time on the pitch this season, losing his place in Benfica’s starting line-up. He made most of his appearances coming off the bench and proved to be an excellent alternative to help the Portuguese champions throughout their long season.
