Mitroglou To Marseille Officially Sealed
Kostas Mitroglou’s transfer from Benfica to Marseille was finalized on deadline day. The deal was announced in an official statement by the French club after Mitroglou successfully passed his medical and signed the new contract.
As reported by AGONAsport yesterday, the terms of the agreement see Marseille paying €15 million for 50% of the player’s rights. Mitroglou will earn a whopping €12.8 million over the course of the four-year deal.
The signing of Mitroglou represents the culmination of Marseille’s attempts to sign the player in recent days. As the transfer window was winding down, Marseille needed a striker and the 29-year-old Greek international eventually became the club’s main target.
Rudi Garcia’s side now get a player who has been playing some of the best football of his career. ‘Mitrogol’ played two full seasons at the Estadio da Luz. He quickly became a cult figure amongst the Benfica supporters. His 52 goals in 86 matches over the two campaigns in Portugal is a solid return as he helped lead the Lisbon giants to two consecutive league titles, including the double last season.
Having been able to do the business for a club like Benfica, Marseille are convinced that Mitroglou can bang in the goals in Ligue 1 as well. Over the course of his career, the Kavala-born player has shown he can score goals consistently. His strike rate for his career is an impressive one goal per two matches.
