Three 1-0 wins were recorded in Wednesday’s Greek Cup group stage matches with Platanias defeating Apollon Smyrnis, Atromitos grabbing a late winner over Kerkyra, and Panachaiki leaving victorious on the road over Anagennisi Karditsas.
Platanias took a big step towards the Greek Cup knockout stages after defeating their fellow Superleague side, Apollon Smyrnis, 1-0 in Chania. In what was an overall poor match, the Cretan side took advantage of their only chance of the match when Patralis found the back of the net in the 68th minute. Group A only consists of three teams after Iraklis’ withdrawal from the Football League, meaning Platanias need only one point from their next match to clinch qualification to the next round.
Atromitos grabbed all three points in their Greek Cup opener over Kerkyra, with Warda’s stoppage time penalty separating the sides at the final whistle. The Athenian side dominated the 90 minutes of play and wasted many changes to take the lead early in the game, however Kerkyra held on until Artymata’s handball in the box resulted in a penalty for the hosts. The former PAOK player, Warda, made no mistake from the spot, giving his side the 1-0 win over the islanders.
Panachaiki will be content with their start in the Greek Cup as they defeated Anagennisi Karditsas 1-0 on the road. The only goal of the match came 11 minutes from time with Eleftheriadis’ successful spot kick. The team from Patra will host Panathinaikos and Larissa in their final two group fixtures with hopes of securing a place in the knockout stages of the competitions.
