In Bahrain at the 67th FIFA Congress, the world governing body passed measures allocating additional spots for the enlarged World Cup.
It wasn’t particularly great news for Europe and Greece. UEFA were given 16 spots, up only three from their current 13.
That still leaves European countries with the spots in the competition, however it won’t make a massive difference for Greece’s qualifying prospects in future tournaments. It will most likely mean that qualifying from Europe will mean finishing in the top two of a particular group. This is not a giant change from the current format.
Below is the breakdown of what each confederation had for World Cup places before the vote and what they will get beginning from the 2026 FIFA World Cup (.5 indicates the potential for a Confederation to gain another place through an intercontinental playoff)
Asia (AFC): From 4.5 qualifiers to 8.5 qualifiers in 2026
North, Central American, and the Caribbean (CONCACAF): From 3.5 qualifiers to 6.5 in 2026
South American (CONMEBOL): From 4.5 qualifiers to 6.5 in 2026
Oceania (OFC): From 0.5 qualifiers to 1.5 in 2026
Africa (AFC): From 5 qualifiers to 9.5 qualifiers in 2026
Europe (UEFA): From 13 qualifiers to 16 qualifiers in 2026
