Nikolaou becomes youngest Greek to score in Champions League
Dimitris Nikolaou notched in a late consolation goal for Olympiacos in a 3-1 loss to Barcelona, becoming the youngest Greek to score in the UEFA Champions League.
It was a memorable night for Dimitris Nikolaou on Wednesday, as he was not only forced to defend the likes of the world’s greatest players in Messi and Suarez, but also managed to score in the Camp Nou against Spanish giants, Barcelona. Although Nikolaou’s goal was a late consolation for the Greek Superleague champions who fell 3-1, the Olympiacos man became the youngest Greek to score in the UEFA Champions League at 19 years and 2 months old.
The previous record holder was Panathinaikos’ Giourkas Seitaridis who scored a real beauty against Manchester United during the 2001 UEFA Champions League second group stages. Seitaridis’ scored at 19 years and nine months old in the Trifylli’s 1-1 draw against the Red Devils.
Before Nikolaou, Olympiacos’ youngest Greek scorer in the UEFA Champions League was Dimitris Mavrogenidis at the age of 21. The former Olympiacos player scored in a 2-2 draw against Norway’s Rosenborg in December 1997.
