The stage is set for the 2018 Greek Cup final after both PAOK and AEK booked their place in this year’s final. The 2018 final will be a repeat of the 2017 final as PAOK prevailed over their Dikefaloi rivals with a 2:1 scoreline to claim the 2017 Cup title.
Unfortunately, last year’s final in Volos at the Panthessaliko stadium, was scarred by fan violence before the game resulting in major consequences for both teams and the image of Greek football. With an order from FIFA, this year’s Cup final will take place in Athens at the OAKA Olympic stadium, which is currently home to AEK Athens.
In addition, the world’s football governing body has ordered this match be played with fans despite the fear of more violence. FIFA feel that a match of this magnitude and importance should not be played behind closed doors and necessary measures should be taken to prevent scenes from last year’s final. These statements were confirmed by the president of the Greek Cup committee Manos Gavriilidis.
An official announcement is expected in the coming days from the Hellenic Football Federation (EPO) confirming the location, date, and time of the 2018 Greek Cup Final.
