There had been conversations suggesting that VAR technology was coming to the Super League, but after the idea was officially put to the EPO’s board of directors, it was confirmed that it will be used in 2018/2019 matches in Greece’s top footballing division.
As seen in other leagues, the VAR system is used when the referee requires help to make up his mind on questionable calls, which can include penalties, offsides and red cards. The technology has received a lukewarm reception so far, with many stating that VAR creates more uncertainty rather than clarity. While it does reduce controversy surrounding certain refereeing decisions, plenty of football players and and coaches have noted that the system needs improvement if it is have a positive effect on the game.
Michalis Koukoulakis was appointed as the EPO’s project leader for the introduction of VAR technology to the Super League at last Thursday’s board of directors meeting.
