Olympiacos and the Other Teams that Dominate Their Respective Leagues
This season, Olympiacos celebrated their 7th consecutive Greek Superleague championship and AGONAsport.com takes a look at other active league title winning streaks across European football.
The last time Olympiacos failed to win the Greek SuperLeague was in 2009/10 when Panathinaikos were crowned league champions. This season, Olympiacos claimed their seventh straight title and their 44th in club history.
However, Olympiacos’ seven consecutive titles is not the longest active winning streak in European football. Currently, BATE Borisov of Belarus and Dinamo Zagreb of Croatia have won their respective league titles since 2006, an 11-year streak.
In Switzerland, Basel count 8 consecutive league titles after mathematically securing top spot in this year’s Swiss Super League.
Skënderbeu have dominated Albanian football for the last six seasons having won their league title since 2009/10. However their seventh straight championship, which would tie Olympiacos’ streak, is all but certain as they sit one point behind Kukesi with four games remaining in the Albanian Superliga. It will be an interesting finale in this year’s Superliga season with the top 2 teams set to clash in the second to last fixture of the season.
Ludogorets of Bulgaria, The New Saints of Wales, and Celtic of Scotland secured their sixth straight league titles this season while Juventus are well on their way to claim top spot in the Italian Serie A for a sixth year running.
To wrap it up, Bayern Munich and Zalgiris have already celebrated their 5th consecutive league titles in Germany and Latvia, respectively.
