Olympiacos Await Pellegrino Response, Set To Trigger Plan B In Coach Search

As Olympiacos get to closer to their first day of preseason in just over two weeks, the club are still without a coach. Many names were bandied about in the aftermath of the Erythrolefki’s domestic campaign. Remi Garde was the most highly sought after manager until talks broke down toward the end of negotiations. Other high-profile names rumored to be amongst consideration were Fran Escriba, Christophe Galtier, and most recently Mauricio Pellegrino.

For one reason or another each situation did not develop according to plan. Pellegrino, in particular, seemed to interest the club greatly in the last few days, however despite a reported big offer from the Greek champions, the Argentine boss is set to return to his homeland to be closer to his family. According to sportfm.gr, Pellegrino will give his final answer to Olympiacos on Tuesday.

With yet another high-profile name seemingly lost, Olympiacos now must turn to Plan B in their pursuit for a new manager. That plan has always been to look seriously at one of two options, former Xanthi coach Razvan Lucescu or current interim manager Takis Lemonis. Other names such as recent APOEL manager Thomas Christiansen, Miroslav Djukic and Besnik Hasi have also been mentioned, however there doesn’t appear to be a willingness to seriously pursue one of those three. Lucescu and Lemonis are the clear front-runners as far as the Plan B options go.

Lucescu impressed in this reign at Xanthi over the last few seasons while Lemonis helped bring stability to Olympiacos down the stretch of this past campaign to lead them to the title. Both managers won’t bring a wow factor to supporters perhaps hoping for a bigger, continental name, however Lucescu and Lemonis have experience in Greek football and Lemonis in particular knows all the ins and outs of the club.

Certainly, there might be another boss the club are considering that hasn’t been talked about in the media. But, as time passes and the new season gets closer, Lucescu and Lemonis now seem to have gained prominence as the club must move quickly to ensure that everything is in place for the start of preseason training.
