Olympiacos celebrate birthday with Platanias thrashing
GREEK SUPERLEAGUE - MATCHDAY 25
|Platanias||0 - 4||Olympiacos|
Mirallas (P) 35'
Olympiacos celebrated its 93rd birthday on Sunday (birthday was on Saturday) by recording a resounding 4-0 away victory over bottom of the table Platanias and keep the pressure on SuperLeague pacesetters AEK and PAOK, who were due to meet in a titanic derby clash later.
Oscar Garcia made several changes to the team that drew 1-1 with Panathinaikos last weekend and the Erythrolefki produced an assured performance, with goals from Alaixys Romao, Marko Marin, Kevin Mirallas and Papou Abou Cisse sealing the three points at a canter.
It’s a result which means that the reigning champions keep within touching distance of leaders AEK, who are four points ahead of their rivals from Piraeus, and second-placed PAOK, who are two points ahead.
There was only ever going to be an Olympiacos victory in Chania in this one-sided matchday 25 clash, with the home side unable to cope with the powerful first-half performance put on by a determined-looking Olympiacos.
Platanias’ resistance lasted just 14 minutes with Romao slamming home the ball from close range following a good cross from left-back Leonardo Koutris.
German attacking midfielder Marin then quickly made it 2-0 just 10 minutes later, slotting home gleefully after team-mate Karim Ansarifard missed a one-on-one chance against Platanias’ Serbian goalkeeper Filip Kljajić.
Mirallas netted from the penalty spot in the 35th minute to give the visitors a 3-0 half-time lead, before Cisse nodded in a fourth just before the hour mark to cap a much-needed fine performance from Garcia’s side.
