Olympiacos were defeated 7-6 by Kirishi in the LEN Euroleague Final and failed to lift their second European Title in three years.
Olympiacos and Kirishi faced off in today's LEN Euroleague final with the hosts, Kirishi, coming into the match as the favorites. The Russian club blindsided Olympiacos in the opening period to take an early 3-0 lead, but a better defensive display from the Erythrolefkes brought them within two goals at halftime 5-3.
Both teams scored one goal in the third period giving Kirishi the 4-6 lead going into the final quarter. With five minutes remaining, Kirishi took a three goal advantage 7-4, but Olympiacos responded with two goals to pull within one with just over a minute to play. Unfortunately for Olympiacos, their last attack on goal went just wide of the post with Kirishi celebrating this year's LEN Euroleague title with a narrow 7-6 win.
Olympiacos were unlucky in various instances in the match with the post stopping the Erythrolefkes on multiple occasions. Additionally, the club made an officially announcement scolding the referees for their “biased” calls during today’s final.
Despite the loss, Olympiacos claimed 2nd place in Europe’s premier Women’s Water Polo competition, making it to the final for the second time in three years (were crowned champions in 2015).
