Olympiacos continue signings with Carcela
Olympiacos announced another signing on Friday with Mehdi Carcela from Granada. The 28-year old winger joins the Erythrolefki on a permanent transfer and not a loan deal.
Mehdi Carcela will be in the Erythrolefka next season after signing a new deal with the Superleague Champions. The club officially announced the move on Friday without making it known how long the player’s contract is until or the fee paid to Granada for his transfer. One thing certain is that Carcela joins Olympiacos on a permanent move, not on loan, and rumors mention that the deal closed at €2.5 million (75% to Granada, 25% to Benfica).
Carcela is Olympiacos’ third signing within the last seven days after the club announced Tachtsidis and Emenike earlier this week. According to reports, Carcela will be one of Olympiacos’ key attacking players as he is expected to take one of the starting wing positions in the Olympiacos roster this season.
Carcela began his professional career in 2008 at Standard Liege after many seasons in the club’s academies. As a key player for the Belgian side, he made 83 appearances and scored 18 goals. He was then apart of Anzi’s spending spree in 2011 and joined the Russian side where he remained there for 2 seasons with 31 appearances and 1 goal.
Carcela returned to Standard Liege in 2013 for two seasons where he once again made a name for himself scoring six goals in 45 appearances. He then made a big jump to Portuguese champions Benfica where he had a full season with 30 appearances and 2 goals, helping his side to the league title and League Cup title. Last season, he joined Granada where he once again had a full season with 22 appearances and 5 goals in the La liga. Olympiacos’ new signing finished as Granada’s co-top scorer and was named the league’s best dribbler behind Messi and Neymar, but could not help his team avoid the drop to the second division.
The 28-year old has 17 caps with his country, Morocco, and one goal.
