In an interesting development, rumours are circling that the Thrylos are displaying interest in acquiring ex-Panathinaikos defender Rodrigo Moledo. Taking into account new head coach Pedro Martins’ eagerness to sign a centre-back, Olympiacos are seriously thinking about taking Moledo in the upcoming summer. Porto defender Ivan Marcano is top of Martins’ list, but according to reports in the Spanish media, clubs such as Valencia and AC Milan are interested in Marcano and it’s highly unlikely the 30-year old will opt to play in Greece.
Olympiacos are keen on signing Moledo, especially given that the centre-back already has a successful experience of playing with Panathinaikos. However, Moledo signed a two-year contract with Internacional in January, so it won’t be easy persuading the Brazilian club to part with their new defender.
Popular forward Kevin Mirallas, who returned to Olympiacos in January on loan from English club Everton, hasn’t impressed and his release clause of 5.6 million euros won’t be activated. Last Sunday, Mirallas seemed to complain after being substituted in the narrow 0:1 defeat to Apollon Smyrnis, something which sealed the Belgian’s fate. Mirallas isn’t expected to participate in Olympiacos’ final two matches of the season, putting an end to his thoroughly disappointing second spell with the Thrylos. In 11 Super League matches, Mirallas has only managed a dismal return of two goals.
On Friday, incoming head coach Pedro Martins made his second trip to Greece, intending to visit Sunday’s match against Panetolikos. As the summer approaches, Martins will continue to make more decisions concerning the club’s roster, however it’s already clear that players such as Felipe Pardo, Seba, Alberto Botia and Uros Djurdjevic are on their way out of Piraeus. At the moment, the 47-year Portuguese manager is assessing the situation with Olympiacos’ loanees, deciding who to summon back to the Thrylos for the 2018/2019 campaign.
Alongside Moledo, Martins’ possible transfer targets include Greece’s Giannis Masouras, Christos Almpanis and Georgios Kyriakopoulos. In the near future, the Portuguese will continue communicating with Olympiacos owner Evangelos Marinakis, looking at how the two can shape the club’s project.
Olympiacos are also wanting to hire a technical director, with the club’s former defender Eric Abidal the main candidate for the role. Recently, Abidal revealed his desire to move into the sports management industry, and the Frenchman has a good relationship with strategic advisor Christian Karembeu and Marinakis.
