The Erythrolefki are heading to the Greek Cup Final for the first time since 2013 after a narrow win over Aris on Sunday…
Janis Strelnieks hit three three-pointers in the final frame to power Olympiacos past Aris 56-49 in the second Greek Cup semi-final on Sunday in Thessaloniki.
Strelnieks did all his damage in the final frame to turn the tide in Olympiacos’ favour as the Lithuanian’s three consecutive three-pointers were enough to set up a Cup Final date with AEK.
Milutinov joined Strelnieks as Olympiacos’ leading scorers with 11 each on the night, marking the only players to reach double-digits for the Erythrolefki. It became clear that the same shooting woes that cost Olympiacos their first defeat in the EuroLeague against Barcelona on Friday lingered for periods on Sunday.
Despite Olympiacos’ clinical shooting in the final frame, it was Aris’ lack of precision on a remarkable 66 shot attempts on the night. The Autokratoras only managed 27% shooting percentage on the night as poor shooting would play a big part in ensuring Aris wouldn’t reach the Cup Final after last year’s appearance.
Kwame Vaughn was the most-efficient Aris scorer as the American was the lone Aris player to reach double-digits with his 15 points.
Aris won’t have long to let the disappointment of the loss to linger as Panagiotis Giannakis’ men travel to Turkey on Tuesday to face Besiktas in the FIBA Basketball Champions League.
Meanwhile, Olympiacos will need to correct their scoring woes before their derby clash with Panathinaikos in the EuroLeague on Friday.
