Olympiacos end season with defeat
GREEK SUPERLEAGUE - MATCHDAY 30
|PAS Giannina||3 - 0||Olympiacos|
Olympiacos ended what has been a disappointing season for the deposed champions in apt fashion on Sunday by slipping to a poor 3-0 defeat at PAS Giannina in heavy rain, while Panionios ended on a high note with a 2-0 home win over Levadiakos.
Interim coach Christos Kontis’ men were well below par at Zosimades and were made to pay dearly, with second half goals from Themistoklis Tzimopoulos, Spanish forward Pedro Conde and Higor Vidal completed a stunning win for the home side.
After a low-key first half in which neither side impressed, Tzimopoulos opened the scoring in the 54th minute.
That goal seemed to boost the home side’s confidence while it seemed many of the Olympiacos players were already starting to thank about their summer holidays and it wasn’t long before a second goal came, prolific forward Conde the man on target just seven minutes later.
A miserable afternoon in soaking conditions in Ioannina was complete for Olympiacos when Vidal added a third goal deep into added time.
Although Olympiacos have secured third place, they finish the season 13 points adrift of champions AEK, who celebrated their first SuperLeague title success for 24 years with a wild party in the streets of Nea Philadelphia on Saturday night.
Incoming coach Pedro Martins, who was named the new Thrylos boss for the 2018/2019 season following the Oscar Garcia’s departure in April, has a sizeable job on his hands to rebuild the Piraeus club team.
|Panionios||2 - 0||Levadiakos|
Meanwhile in Nea Smyrni, Panionios ran out comfortable 2-0 winners over Levadiakos thanks to goals from Yaya Banana (16) and Samed Yesil (53).
The result means Panionios end a mixed season in seventh place, with Levadiakos finishing a respectable 10th.
