Olympiacos lost 11-13 to Dunaujvaros in the final of the Women’s LEN Trophy.
The Erythrolefkes got off to a great start, as Alexandra Asimaki scored a goal within the first minute of play to give Olympiacos a 1-0 lead early on. The first period would prove to be a high-scoring one, as it concluded with the score being 4-4. The Hungarians would break the deadlock in the second period, as they took a 5-7 lead going into halftime.
In the third period, the Hungarians would extend their lead to 5-8 and 6-9. Olympiacos would then score three unanswered goals within two minutes to level the score at 9-9. Dunaujvaros would score a goal late in the third period to take a 9-10 lead going into the final period of play.
An early fourth period equalizer from Olympiacos’ Monika Eggens would level the score at 10-10 and put the Erythrolefkes back in it. However, the Hungarians would then put two goals past Olympiacos’ substitute keeper, 19-year-old Ioanna Stamatopoulou, to take a 10-12 lead. This would eventually be enough, as Dunaujvaros held on for the 11-13 win to claim their first title in competition history. The top scorer for Olympiacos was Alkisti Avramidou with four goals.
