Olympiacos’ possible opponents in the Champions League group stage
The 32 team puzzle for the UEFA Champions League group stages is complete and Greece will have a sole representative Olympiacos. The group stage draw will take place on Thursday in Nyon.
The long Champions League qualifying process, which began in early July, was completed on Wednesday as the scene is set for the group stage draw which will take place on Thursday at 7:00 PM local Greek time(12:00 PM EST) at UEFA’s Headquarters in Nyon, Switzerland. The 32-teams will be separated into four pots and eight groups of four teams each will be formed.
Pots 2-4 are determined based on the 2016 UEFA Club Rankings while Pot 1 will contain the champions from the countries ranked 1st-8th in the UEFA Associations Coefficient Rankings. Olympiacos will be seeded in pot 3 while Cypriot champions APOEL will be seeded in pot 4.
At a glance, the second pot is filled with the biggest names of European football while pot 1 consists of world class teams such as Real Madrid, Chelsea, Juventus, and Bayern Munich but also contains inviting opponents like Spartak Moscow and Shakhtar Donetsk.
A reminder, teams from the same pot cannot be drawn against each other and teams from the same country cannot be drawn into the same group. Olympiacos will avoid all teams seeded in pot 3 which include: Napoli, Tottenham, Basel, Anderlecht, Liverpool, Roma, and Besiktas. The Erythrolefki will be drawn with one team from pot 1, pot 2, and pot 4. Below are Olympiacos’ possible opponents.
