In a highly-anticipated match between the two powerhouses of Greek men’s volleyball, it was the visiting team from Piraeus that would take the first set by a score of 25-21, giving PAOK their first set loss of the season. In the second set, however, the home team would level the match at 1-1, as they won four consecutive points to end the set, taking it 25-20. This was the first set Olympiacos had lost in the league so far this season.
Olympiacos would then breeze through the third set, taking it 25-14. In the fourth set, Olympiacos continued to dominate as they quickly raced out to an 11-5 lead. However, the home team would fight back to find themselves trailing only by two points, 12-10. Despite Olympiacos once again extending their lead, to 20-15, the hosts would not back down as they quickly found themselves trailing only 20-19. A late push by Olympiacos would see them take the set 25-21, giving them the match by an overall score of 3-1, and handing PAOK their first match loss of the season.
After five matchdays in the A1 Volleyball League, Olympiacos now sit alone in first place, while PAOK are closely behind in second. Although Olympiacos currently have the edge, the season is far from over and there will likely be more big matches to come between these two rivals.
