The Olympiacos Women’s Water Polo pulled off a historic comeback against Sabadell in the semi-finals of the LEN Euroleague competition (winning in penalties) and will play the hosts Kirishi in tomorrow’s final.
The Olympiacos Women’s Water Polo team faced off against the competition’s defending champions, Sabadell, in the LEN Women’s Euroleague semi-finals for a place in tomorrow's championship game. The Spanish club, however, got off to a blistering start and pulled ahead 5-1 in the second quarter with the match looking to be out of reach for the Erythrolefkes.
Olympiacos were down, but not out as they dominated the third period to miraculously pull within one goal, 6-5, going into the final period. There was late drama in the fourth period as Olympiacos trailed 7-6 before Bianconi equalized with just 19 seconds to play to send the game to penalties,.
In penalties, Olympiacos’ keeper, Diamantopoulou, who was Olympiacos’ best player in normal regulation, denied Sabadell on two occasions while the Erythrolefki went a perfect 4/4 to win the shootout 4-2!
Olympiacos will face the host team Kirisi of Russia in tomorrow’s Euroleague Final (4:00 PM local Greek time, 9:00 AM EST) with hopes of being crowned European Champions for the second time in three years!
