Olympiacos Seeking 12th European Title

Olympiacos Seeking 12th European Title

With a win today, Olympiacos could win their third European trophy in men’s water polo and 12th European trophy across all sports.

Watch LIVE from AGONAsport game three of the Basket League Finals between Panathinaikos & Olympiacos.

As Olympiacos will face Italy’s Pro Recco in the final of the LEN Champions League, this marks the 31st time that an Olympiacos team in any sport will compete in a European final. In men’s water polo, it is the seventh time. A win would mark the third European trophy for Olympiacos in men’s water polo. The previous two both came in 2002, when the Erythrolefki won both the Champions League and the Super Cup. Olympiacos have previously lost four European finals in men’s water polo, including the 2001 and 2016 Champions League finals.

This also marks Olympiacos’ fourth European final this year, as they also made European finals in men’s volleyball, women’s volleyball, and women’s water polo. The men’s volleyball team fell in the final of the CEV Challenge Cup. Their two European trophies came in 1996 and in 2005 (CEV Top Team’s Cup), as they lost their five other European finals appearances.

The women’s volleyball team won the CEV Challenge Cup this season, for their first European trophy in history. They previously had one one other final, which was last year’s Challenge Cup which they lost to the same team they beat this year (Turkey’s Bursa).

The women’s water polo team came up short in the final of this year’s LEN Trophy, marking their fourth loss in a European final in club history. The women’s water polo team did win three European titles though, in 2014 (LEN Trophy), and two in 2015 (Euroleague and the Super Cup).

The other sport where Olympiacos has made European finals, is in the Euroleague for men’s basketball. The Erythrolefki came up short in five Euroleague finals, but did manage to win three of them (1997, 2012, and 2013).
