Following Olympiacos’ official announcement on social media, 21-year old Igor Silva expressed his delight in signing for the reigning Greek champions on Olympiacos TV. “I am happy to be here, a part of Greece’s best team,” stated Silva. “I will try to show my talent and play nice football for our fans. I hope to win many titles with Olympiacos, it’s what we all strive for. I will give my all, because we want to become champions.”
Before being snapped up by Asteras Tripolis in 2015, Igor Silva played for Comercial-SP in his native Brazil. The right-back went on to impress in the Super League, making 27 appearances in the championship and scoring one goal along with two assists.
It’s expected that Silva will form a replacement for Diogo Figueiras, who is rumoured to be on his way to home country Portugal on a loan from Olympiacos. Another player leaving Piraeus is forward Emmanuel Emenike. The Nigerian has been a huge disappointment since signing in the summer, not scoring in five Super League matches. Reports in Turkey suggest that Emenike will soon sign for Osmanlispor.
Given Emenike’s departure, Olympiacos are scanning the market for another forward. The Thrylos recently signed popular Belgian Kevin Mirallas on loan from Everton, but the Piraeus outfit aren’t willing to stop there. There was talk of Joel Campbell returning to the club, however his current injury seems to have dampened Olympiacos’ interest.
Nevertheless, there are other options. Spanish forward Jonathan Soriano, a player currently on the books of China’s Beijing Guoan, is admired by new head coach Oscar Garcia. Attackers such as Loic Remy and Jonathan Bamba would also fit Olympiacos’ demands.
Alongside the striker position, the Thrylos are keen on signing a goalkeeper to keep number one Silvio Proto on his toes. Since Stefanos Kapino was frozen out of the team, Proto has not had any competition. It’s worth remembering that Atromitos Athens netminder Andreas Gianniotis, a player who has starred for the unlikely title contenders, is on loan from Olympiacos. He is likely to return to his parent club in the summer.
