Olympiacos’ Slow Start Similar To Fellow European Champions
Olympiacos are having one of their worst starts to a season in decades. The reigning Greek champions find themselves in 7th place at the moment, having only won two of their six matches thus far and currently trail leaders AEK by five points.
Despite, the poor start, the Greek champions are not alone in their early season struggles. The top five leagues in Europe this season see all the defending champions enduring a slow start. In those leagues, none of last season’s champions are in 1st place.
In England, Germany, and Spain, the defending champs are already well off the pace. Before the international break, Chelsea went down 1-0 to Manchester City as they fell six points behind City and Manchester United in the English Premier League. Bayern Munich have had a slow start that has cost Carlo Ancelotti his job and are currently five points behind leaders Borussia Dortmund. Real Madrid are worse than them all as they find themselves seven points behind leaders and bitter rivals Barcelona.
And that’s not all. In Italy and France, the gaps are not as big, but the champions have been knocked off their perch for now. Juventus is behind Napoli by three points. The same difference separates Monaco from leaders PSG.
Elsewhere, the situation is very similar. Portuguese champions Benfica are five points behind Porto, Feyenoord trails PSV by three points and closer to Greece, in Cyprus, APOEL are already seven points behind Anorthosis.
