The final two fixtures of Round 13 in the Greek Basket League were worth the weight as heavyweights Olympiacos and Panathinaikos were handed stern tests…

Greek basketball’s titans were put to the test to wrap-up the first half of the Basket League season, as Olympiacos and Panathinaikos had to overcome adversity in their domestic clashes.

After a rough end to their EuroLeague doubleheader, Olympiacos’ road trip continued with the Piraeus giants visiting Promitheas in Patras on Sunday evening. Yiannis Sfairopoulos looked to steer his men back to the win column after a heavy defeat to Khimki on Thursday, and the Erythrolefki managed to do so – but not without a scare.

Still, Olympiacos put their struggles aside to claim an 87-73 victory at the Dimitris Tofalos Arena with Vassilis Spanoulis putting in his best performance of the season. ‘Kill Bill’ racked up 18 points to add to Kyle Wiltjer’s 17 points en route to the club’s first road win in the Basket League since November.

Olympiacos seemed to be on their way to a landslide win with a 43-18 lead just before the halfway mark of the second quarter, but a shocking 17-0 run from Promitheas forced Olympiacos to refocus.

With Sfairopoulos planning to rest his starters early on, the Greek benchboss was forced to put his starting five back on the court to see out a much-needed win for the Piraeus outfit.

Milan Milosevic’s 21-point haul for Promitheas was a game-high, while Octavius Ellis notched a double-double as usual offensive powerhouse, Nikos Gikas, had a poor shooting night.

Lavrio give Panathinaikos all they can handle

Following in the footsteps of their arch-rivals, Panathinaikos picked up a win on Sunday night; however, a pesky Lavrio side wouldn’t go down quietly as the Metallorichoi forced Panathinaikos to double overtime in a 120-118 defeat to the Trifylli.

Lavrio’s McKenzie Moore notched 30 points on the night, but the American’s efforts couldn’t prevent heartbreak for the visitors in the second overtime.

Nikos Pappas was the protagonist for Panathinaikos with 24 points, while colleagues Nikos Calathes (21 points, 10 assists) and James Gist (11 points, 13 rebounds) both notched double-doubles to power Panathinaikos to their 13th win to start the season.

Lavrio looked to be the better team heading into the first overtime, but the visitors failed to score in the final moments of the first overtime frame as Panathinaikos forced a second overtime period.

A three-point dagger from Pappas with 51 seconds left on the clock would be the difference on the night, as the pair of clubs for the highest combined points total in the Greek Basket League since the 1990/91 season when Peristeri and Aris combined for 249 points.
