Olympiacos to bring in Engels to replace Retsos
In the wake of Panagiotis Retsos’ imminent move to Bayer Leverkusen, Olympiacos are moving decisively to replace the young Greek star before the summer transfer window.
The Erythrolefki have decided to replace the outgoing Retsos with 22-year-old Belgian center-back Bjorn Engels. The Belgium U-21 international has featured for Club Brugge in his home country for the last six seasons. In that team, he has steadily become a main cog in the Brugge backline, helping his club to the league title in the 2015/16 season. Engels has amassed over 100 appearances in his career, an impressive stat considering his young age.
The 6’4 Engels was reportedly drawing the interest of several continental clubs this summer including English Premier League sides Arsenal, Fulham, and Stoke City. The player is considered a future Belgian national team player for the full senior side and has been consistently described as one of the top young Belgian defenders of the last few years.
Several outlets have reported that an agreement has been reached between the two clubs and between Olympiacos and the player himself. The actual fee regarding the deal has not yet been released, howver rumors state that it reaches up to €7 million . Engels is on his way to Greece to complete the deal.
Olympiacos are also keen to bring in another defender before the window closes. Aleksandar Dragovic is a name that continues to pop up in transfer rumors. While the 26-year-old Austrian defender is considered an expensive option for Olympiacos, the view is that a transfer is possible considering he has been transfer listed by Bayer Leverkusen and there is also the possibility of a loan deal.
