Olympiacos’ new head coach, Besnik Hasi, recently met with technical director Husillos and it appears that he has asked for five starting XI player signings over the summer. With just a week remaining until Olympiacos depart for Seefeld (pre-season training), the club’s new technical team have set things in motion for this season’s roster. Sources mention that the team’s priorities are to sign a stopper, a midfielder, a center forward, a top class winger, and a left wing back.
Many names have popped up on the rumour mill for Olympiacos in the past days, however there have been some consistent names since the end of the season. This year, president Evangelos Marinakis is willing to dig deep in his pockets and bring Olympiacos to the next level. This seems to be the case when one looks at the players that the Erythrolefki are interested in.
The most recent name to appear in the transfer gossip, is Steven Defour who is Hasi’s number one target to enhance the midfield. Besnik Hasi knows Defour from his spell at Anderlecht and is keen on working with the player once again. However, with Burnley pricing the player around €6 Million and the player’s current contract at €1.5 million a year, the cost is high for Greece’s “standards.” Despite the financial aspect, Marinakis could answer Hasi’s request and bring the Belgium international to the Limani. The player recently stated in “Het Nieuwsblad” that he has not been officially contacted by Olympiacos, but he is open to new challenges. Teams from both China and England are also interested in the player.
As for the center back position, rumours regarding Gonzalo Rodriguez are becoming a daily case. The 33-year old stopper was recently set free from Fiorentina and has drawn the attention of numerous teams. Although sources mention that Rodriguez has been offered the best deal from Mexico, the player wants to remain in Europe. Olympiacos is an inviting destination for the former Fiorentina captain as they can offer him the chance to compete in the prestigious UEFA Champions League. Moreover, technical director Husillos has an excellent relationship with both the player and his manager. Despite a recent report from Argentina, stating Rodriguez turned down Olympiacos’ offer for the sake of Racing Club (Argentina), the player’s manager denied these rumors and further confirmed his client’s desire to stay in Europe.
Apart from the two names above, sources mention that Olympiacos are also interested in Felipe Mora (striker), winger Vladimir Weiss, and midfielder Vadis Odjidja-Ofoe. The Greek champions have reached out to Mora and he is expected to reply within the following days.
Weiss has been in the gossip since day one and he hopes to return to Europe. At the moment, Olympiacos look the favorites to bring the player back to European football as he enjoyed his short spell at the club before having issues with Spanish manager Michel. As for Vadis Odjidja-Ofoe, the 28 year old midfielder is a former acquaintance of coach Hasi and was recently named the MVP of last year’s Polish Ekstraklasa with 5 goals and 14 assists in 42 appearances.
