Injuries continue to plague Olympiacos to start the new basketball season as the Piraeus giants will be without captain Vassilis Spanoulis and Brian Roberts when the EuroLeague season tips-off against Baskonia Vitoria Gasteiz on Thursday night.

Coming off a narrow loss to arch-rivals Panathinaikos in the Greek Basketball League on Sunday, Olympiacos will look to rebound from their derby disappointment with a strong showing in their continental curtain raiser.

Olympiacos were without the service of both Spanoulis and Roberts at the weekend, but were hopeful that at least the latter would return to service on Thursday night.

The Erythrolefki will host Baskonia at the Heraklion Arena – the first time the club is hosting a competitive game in Crete.

Former Baskonia man Kim Tillie will face his former employers after leaving the Basque club this summer. Baskonia’s roster continues to boast many dangerous options offensively, including former Barcelona man Marcelinho Huertas – who will provide an added threat alongside Jayson Granger.

Depth scoring from Baskonia’s bench could also be a threat as the Spaniards also have former NBA-man Carlos Delfino at their disposal.

Although Baskonia hasn’t beat Olympiacos in over two years, expect a tight – yet high-tempo – encounter in Heraklion.
