Olympiacos’ worst start in 30 years
Despite Olympiacos’ dominance in Greece over the years, the Erythrolefki have gotten off to their worst start since Koskotas was the president of the club, an era that no Olympiacos fan wants to remember.
Coming into the 2017/18 Superleague season, Olympiacos were deemed the clear favorites to win their eighth straight league title taking into account their dominance over the years and their healthy financial state. The club made many moves over the summer transfer window bringing in many high dollar signings when compared to the standard in Greek football. However, after six Superleague fixtures, the Erythrolefki sit in seventh place (behind Levadiakos!) with two wins, two draws, and two defeats. Their eight points out of a possible 18 marks their worst start to the season in the last 30 years (since 1987/88 season).
That year, Georgios Koskotas was the club’s president and it marked the beginning of Olympiacos’ “Stone Ages.” In the 1987/88 season, Olympiacos went winless in their first ELEVEN league fixtures and at one point, where the only team in the league without a victory as they trickled down to second from bottom in the A’ Ethniki standings. Their first victory of the season came against a weak Panachaiki side (2-0), in front of 65,000 fans at the OAKA stadium on matchday 12. The Erythrolefki managed to finish the season in 8th place but missed out on Europe for the following year.
Olympiacos’ record of 2-2-2 is the club’s third worst start in history since the induction of professional football in Greece back in 1979-80. One year before the catastrophic 1987/88 start, the Piraeus side began the 1986/87 season with only two wins, one draw, and three defeats.
Below is a look at Olympiacos’ start to the 1986/87 and 1987/88 seasons after six league fixtures.

That year, the Erythrolefki failed to celebrate victory from matchdays 21 through 25, tasting defeated to Aris, Panachaiki, and OFI while drawing with Athinaikos and Doxa Dramas.
