Omonia gain vital victory at AEL Limassol
CYPRIOT FIRST DIVISION - MATCHDAY 21

Omonia Nicosia gained a vital win in the Cypriot First Division, defeating AEL Limassol away 3:2 in an enthralling encounter at the Tsirion Stadium.
The visitors trailed 1:2 entering the second half, but the capital outfit demonstrated remarkable character to pick up a victory which could prove to be a turning point in their season.
English forward Matt Derbyshire gave Omonia a lead within eighteen minutes, slotting Mamadu’s inviting cross beyond the outstretched dive of AEL goalkeeper Vozinha. However, the home team had the perfect response. Andreas Avraam made the score 1:1 with an excellent finish inside the penalty area, before Mikel Arruabarrena’s close-range header handed AEL the advantage before half-time.
Nevertheless, Omonia didn’t let that setback faze them. On 60 minutes, Mamadu turned from provider to scorer, as his powerful strike was deflected past the stranded Vozinha. Both teams traded promising opportunities, but the eventual winning goal came in strange circumstances.
Charging out from his goal, Vozinha hammered a loose ball upfield, but his sloppy clearance could only find the lurking Mamadu who punished him with a delightful effort from 25 yards out. This victory means that sixth placed Omonia are now just the one point behind AEL Limassol in fifth position.
