Only Aionioi in the Basket League’s Starting-5
Three Olympiacos players and two Panathinaikos players were named to the best starting five of this season’s Greek Basket League.
The two teams that dominate the domestic league proved once more their superiority as the League’s starting-5 was solely comprised of players from Panathinaikos and Olympiacos. Nick Calathes, Vassilis Spanoulis, Kostas Papanikolaou, Giorgos Printezis, and Chris Singleton were named the 2016/17 Greek Basket League’s starting-5.
The League’s best five are voted on by the coaches and captains of the 14 clubs taking part in the League along with votes from media representatives and fans. The coaches’ and captains’ votes weigh 60% of the final results.
A few days ago, Nick Calathes was named the Basket League’s MVP for the 2016/17 season. The Panathinaikos captain was the Basket League’s regular season assist leader (145), averaging 5.57 APG, and the playoff’s top scorer with 120 points (13.3 PPG).
Vasilis Spanoulis was the playoff’s assist leader counting 46 assists in total (5.1 APG) and second behind Calathes in the regular season averaging 5.4 APG.
Kostas Papanikolaou was fifth highest scorer in the playoffs averaging 11.1 PPG while averaging 9.21 PPG and 1.58 APG in the regular season.
Giorgos Printezis, who finished first in the fan vote, joined Vasilis Spanoulis as the only players that were named too last season’s starting-5 as well. The 32-year old forward averaged 8.74 PPG in the regular season and 10 PPG in the playoffs.
Chris Singleton, who was the runner-up in the Basket League MVP chase. finished as the playoff’s third highest scorer with 98 points, averaging 10.89 PPG. In the regular season, Singleton averaged 10.84 PPG.
The Basket League second starting five was also dominated by Panathinaikos and Olympiacos players. Apart from Aris’ Will Cummings, the remaining four included Mike James (Panathinaikos), K.C. Rivers (Panathinaikos), and Giannis Bourousis (Panathinaikos) along with Olympiacos’ Nikola Milutinov.
