The Trifylli rebounded from last week’s defeat to Barcelona with a clinical win over Bamberg at OAKA on Thursday night…
Nikos Calathes scored 23 points and Chris Singleton added a double-double as Panathinaikos opened the home half of their EuroLeague campaign with a 93-83 win over Bamberg at OAKA on Thursday night.
A heavy defeat to Barcelona last Friday certainly served as a wake-up call for Panathinaikos as the Athenians opened up a 22-15 lead against their German opponents. Calathes played a big part in the opening frame, not just with scoring but assisting as he provided the final pass for an emphatic alley-oop from James Gist.
The second quarter was much tighter as Bamberg kept Panathinaikos in check. Aleksej Nikolic and Lucca Staiger hit three-pointers to fuel the Bamberg effort, but Panathinaikos held their own in the quarter with Zach Auguste providing a much-needed boost on defense before his contributions offensively paved the way for an eight-point lead for Panathinaikos at halftime.
It wasn’t long before Panathinaikos’ lead reached double digits, and consecutive baskets from Ian Vougioukas, Calathes, and Marcus Denmon stretched that lead to 18 points at 57-39. Bamberg would fight back to trim the lead 13 by the end of the quarter.
Despite a valiant fightback from Bamberg, the deficit would prove to be just too much to overcome as Panathinaikos would stave-off a comeback from the Germans. The win improves Panathinaikos to 1-1, while Bamberg fall to 0-2 early in their campaign.
Round 3 sees Panathinaikos travel to Russia to face CSKA Moscow, while Bamberg continue their road trip as the Germans pay Unicaja Malaga a visit in Spain.
