Despite a packed OAKA, Panathinaikos were unable to slowdown EuroLeague leader CSKA Moscow on Friday night…
CSKA Moscow are now two games clear atop the EuroLeague standings following a 75-70 win over Panathinaikos at a packed OAKA on Friday night.
A dismal second quarter sealed Panathinaikos fate, though the Greek Champions were still in the contest late on and will be ruing missed chances to slowdown the runaway leaders.
Sergio Rodriguez was the protagonist of the night as he led CSKA with 21 points, including 4/6 shooting from three-point range.
Panathinaikos, who suffered their second defeat in the space of three days and their third loss in their last five outings, were led by Nikos Pappas’ 14 points and Nikos Calathes’ 14-point, 11-assist double-double.
Thanassis Antetokounmpo also had a solid offensive evening as the former New York Knick notched 13 points in the losing effort.
Despite an early five-point lead by the end of the first quarter, Panathinaikos’ offense went ice cold in the second frame as the Trifylli could only muster nine points before relinquishing their lead by halftime.
The game was poised perfectly at the end of three quarters with the score tied at 51-51. Another tight defensive effort from CSKA, however, would see Panathinaikos fail to keep up with the Russians’ clinical offense.
The win pads CSKA’s lead atop the EuroLeague standings with the Russians rolling towards the playoffs at 15-4, while Panathinaikos (12-7) remain in a three-way tie for fourth after Real Madrid’s defeat in Malaga and Zalgiris Kaunas’ win over Valencia Basket.
Panathinaikos return to domestic duties at the weekend with a visit from Lavrio schedule for Sunday before Zalgiris Kaunas visit the Greek Capital on Thursday night.
