Panathinaikos Hit With Hefty Point Deductions
Panathinaikos were hit with heavy penalties for the incidents that took place in their fixture against PAOK in the Superleague playoffs including a three point deduction from this season’s playoffs, a two point deduction in next year's Superleague, two home matches without fans, and a financial fine.
As expected, Panathinaikos will pay a heavy price for the incidents that took place at Leoforos during their matchday 2 fixture against PAOK for the Superleague playoffs when a beer can thrown from the stands hit PAOK coach Vladan Ivic, sending him to the hospital which resulted in the referee's decision to abandon the match. Today, the Superleague’s Disciplinary Committee punished the Trifylli with heavy penalties including:
- Panathinaikos will lose the match against PAOK 0-3 and PAOK will be awarded three points.
- A three point deduction to be enforced in this year's playoff standings
- A two point deduction to be enforced at the beginning of next year's SuperLeague
- Two home matches without fans (closed stadium)
- A fine of €41,500
Panathinaikos will likely lodge an appeal and send the case to a second degree court with hopes of reducing the original penalties.
Panathinaikos’ administration were frustrated with the court's decision and proceeded with a statement stating that the club has been punished every season with point deductions for minor offenses. The announcement concluded with the following: “Panathinaikos does not pursue relationships with either the government, EPO, or the Sport Justice. As a result, we see our team becoming the scapegoat on a yearly basis while being hit with the heaviest of penalties.”
After the court’s decision, the current playoff standings see PAOK jump into first with 11 points, AEK in second with 9 points, Panathinaikos down to third with 5 points, and Panionios in fourth with 4 points. Another big court decision is expected on Tuesday where PAOK and AEK will learn their consequences for the fan violence that took place during this year’s Cup final in Volos.
