Panathinaikos extended their unbeaten start to the season at home against a helpless Panionios side, while Olympiacos improved to 21-0 in their all-time series with Rethymno.
Matchday 18’s slate of games was one game lighter after the highly-anticipated Thessaloniki Derby between Aris and PAOK was postponed after a request from local authorities, with a make-up date set for 21 March.
In Athens, Panathinaikos made light work of Panionios at OAKA as the Trifylli bounced-back from the midweek loss to Real Madrid in the EuroLeague with a 97-53 win to improve to 18-0 on the season. Zach Auguste led Panathinaikos with a near double-double performance as the center notched 15 points and 9 rebounds on a night when Xavi Pascual gave his bench plenty of playing time.
Panathinaikos couldn’t be blamed for having one eye on Friday’s clash with Unicaja Malaga, but that didn’t prevent Panathinaikos’ depth from carrying the load on Sunday against Panionios. A dominant performance from the Trifylli at both ends of the court saw Panionios notched just seven points in both the second and fourth quarter as Panathinaikos strolled to a blowout win.
On Monday, Olympiacos made the most of their Cretan voyage as the Piraeus giants reclaimed sole possession of second place following an 86-66 defeat of Rethymno. Ioannis Papapetrou led Olympiacos with 16 points, while Bobby Brown enjoyed his best game in an Olympiacos jersey.
Perhaps it was Vassilis Spanoulis who stole headlines after the game as the Greek playmaker surpassed 2,000 assists in the Greek top flight as he notched eight dimes on the night to move to 2,006 assists all-time – good enough for second place behind Dimitris Diamantidis (2141 assists)
