Nikos Calathes was the only player to reach double digits, but that didn’t stop Panathinaikos from improving to 8-0 on the season as the Trifylli earned an 88-70 win over Aris at Alexandreio on Sunday.

After a disappointing midweek loss to Zalgiris Kaunas in the EuroLeague, Panathinaikos rebounded to claim an emphatic victory on the road as Aris slumped to their second straight domestic loss.

After last week’s horrific shooting night against Promitheas, Aris started the derby clash in much better form but still trailed 21-17 after the first quarter.

Keith Benson, who led Aris with 18 points and 9 rebounds on the night, was kept quiet in the second quarter as Panathinaikos padded their lead with a 27-15 run in the frame as the Trifylli pulled ahead 48-32 by halftime.

Aris did look motivated to start the third quarter, but a solid defensive effort from Panathinaikos made it difficult for Panagiotis Giannakis’ men to cut the lead by anything more than one point.

Ahead by 15 points, Panathinaikos remained in cruise control for most of the fourth quarter before putting on the finish touches to pad their lead en route to the victory in Greece’s second capital.

At 8-0, Panathinaikos continue to occupy top spot on their own. Meanwhile, Aris continue to hover outside of the play-off spots with their 3-5 record.

Both sides return to European duties midweek with Panathinaikos aiming for a rebound in the EuroLeague AX Armani Exchange Olimpia Milano, while Aris will hope to end a two-match losing skid in all competitions when they visit Stelmet Zielona Gora in the FIBA Basketball Champions League.
