After a positive ending to the season against PAOK in Toumba, Panathinaikos will now turn their focus to next season’s plans. As Marinos Ouzounidis stated in an interview, the club’s main goal is to keep the team’s core the same for the upcoming season. He also made clear that the Prasini will make a great effort to keep both Victor Klonaridis and Mpoku (both on loan) as both players proved to be valuable assets to the team.
In regards to new signings, the main goal is to give the necessary depth to the already existing roster. The upcoming season schedule will have more fixtures and in order to avoid player fatigue at the end of the season, the Prasini will add depth to their bench.
Sources mention that Panathinaikos will move to sign a second striker behind Marcus Berg. Hamza Younes and Apostolos Giannou seem to be among the top names on the list, yet both cases have their own difficulties. Younes, who finished as the league’s second highest scorer with Xanthi, can be signed as a free agent yet, however he takes a place of a foreigner on the roster (the club has all 5 foreign spots filled). Giannou is currently not satisfied with his current team in China, Guangzhou, however he has one year remaining on his current contract.
Masoud Shojaei of Panionios remains a “hot” name for the Trifylli as he is favored by Ouzounidis for the attacking midfield position. However, no real progress has been made between the two sides.
With Olivier Boumal and Panagiotis Vlachodimos on their way out, Panathinaikos will also move to sign a wing attacker. Both defenders Nuno Reis and Rasmus Thelander are also expected to be released by the club. The Prasini seem to be interested in AEK’s Kolovetsios, who is leaving the Kitrinomavri, and Yaya Banana, who is expected to leave Platanias.
Panathinaikos are in search of two wing backs that will be alternative options to the starters Niklas Hult and Ousmane Coulibaly. The situation with Rodrigo Moledo, who is not on best terms with the club, could depart if an inviting offer comes (€2 Million) in with Internacional showing heavy interest in the Brazilian centreback.
Finally, the Trifylli will renew the contracts of both youngsters Staikos and Evaggelou as their current contract expires in 2018. The two young prospects will be given more playing time next season and will have the chance to prove themselves with the club. Taso Chatzigiovannis has already extended his contract until 2020.
