Panathinaikos bowed out of this year’s Euroleague Playoffs after falling in game three 79-61 to Fenerbahce and were swept 3-0 by the Turkish club.
After two defeats in Greece to Fenerbahce, it was a must win game for Panathinaikos in game 3 of the Euroleague Playoffs best of five series. However, similar to the first two games in the series, today’s matchup in Turkey turned into another nightmare for the Prasini.
After the 15 minute mark, the Trifylli could not string anything on the offensive end as they struggled to put points on the board and Fenerbahce took a 10-point lead into the final quarter (52-42). In the final 10 minutes, the visitors let up on the defensive end and with Fenerbahce putting on a show from behind the arch, the hosts cruised to a 79-61 victory to secure their place in this year’s Euroleague Final-4.
Rivers led Panathinaikos with 16 points, going 3/6 from 3-point range, while the rest of the team went 2/18! Singleton, who was Panathinaikos’ best player during the regular season, did not impress for yet another playoff game as he finished with only 12 points. James, Gist, and Calathes were each on a bad night and could not help Panathinaikos send the series to a game 4. Six Fenerbahce players finished with double digit points.
Panathinaikos failed to reached the Euroleague Final-4 for a fifth consecutive season and bowed out of the playoffs after a 3-0 sweeping for a second straight year (last year was Baskonia).
