Nikos Calathes’ absence did keep Panathinaikos from taking care of business against Maccabi FOX Tel Aviv in the EuroLeague on Tuesday night…
James Gist and Chris Singleton both notched a double-double as Panathinaikos soared to an 89-76 win over Maccabi FOX Tel Aviv at OAKA on Tuesday night.
With Nikos Calathes out due to injury, the likes of Gist and Singleton powered Panathinaikos to their second straight win in the EuroLeague to keep pace with Fenerbahce for third place.
Norris Cole led Maccabi’s scorer with 14 points, but Panathinaikos’ depth and bench scoring ensured the Israeli outfit wouldn’t be leaving Greece with a win.
Panathinaikos honored long-time member of the club, Tassos Stefanou, prior to the game following news that the former player-turned-general manager of the club passed away earlier in the day.
Both offenses started efficiently in the first quarter with Panathinaikos edging out a 25-21 lead in the first quarter.
Another tight quarter followed in the second frame, but again Panathinaikos were able to keep in front as the home side increased their lead to 49-33 by halftime.
Panathinaikos would extend their lead into double digits after the interval with KC Rivers, whose 15 points co-led Panathinaikos scorers along with Gist, providing a spark after halftime.
Despite their best playmaker not available for the clash, Panathinaikos were still in a comfortable position to cruise to the final buzzer as the Athens-based club improved to 9-4 on the season. Maccabi, meanwhile, are now just 7-6 on the season.
Panathinaikos face a quick turnaround with the second half of this week’s EuroLeague doubleheader taking the Trifylli to Serbia to take on Crvena Zvezda mts Belgrade on Thursday; the same day Maccabi take on Fenerbahce in Tel Aviv.
