Panionios and PAS Giannina fire blanks in goalless stalemates
GREEK SUPERLEAGUE - MATCHDAY 23
|Panionios||0 - 0||Asteras Tripolis|
Panionios had goalkeeper Matic Kotnik to thank on Saturday as the Panthers secured a goalless home draw by an impressive Asteras Tripolis, while PAS Giannina failed to sparkle in a 0-0 draw with Levadiakos.
Michalis Grigoriou’s Panionios’, who are fifth in the SuperLeague standings 10 points behind fourth-placed Atromitos, were not much better than they were in last weekend’s 1-0 defeat by Olympiacos, with the visitors missing a host of chances to score, especially in the second half.
Slovenian goalkeeper Kotnik was the main reason why Asteras could not take advantage, making a strong of fine saves to deny the Tripolis club and stop them winning a match they really should have by a two or three-goal margin.
The result at the Nea Smyrni stadium in this low-key matchday 23 clash means it’s a case of as you were for both clubs, with Panionios holding a three-point lead over Tripolis, who are seventh.
|PAS Giannina||0 - 0||Levadiakos|
In Ioannina, Levadiakos put the brakes on in-form PAS Giannina and their Spanish forward Pedro Conte in a tightly-contested match at the Zosimades stadium.
Sixth-placed PAS came into the match in a rich vein of form, but Levadiakos, through a combination of infuriating time-wasting tactics and dogged defending, managed to come away with a point.
The Livadeia club even hit the post just after half-time with Marko Markovski the unlucky man who almost gave his team a win they did not deserve.
